TRAINING DEPARTMENT

The purpose of the department is to increase the effectiveness of agricultural extension through the provision of agricultural training and information to the clientele

VISION STATEMENT

An efficient, effective and relevant training and extension service by 2030.

MISSION STATEMENT

To facilitate sustainable agricultural production, productivity and profitability through coordinated staff and farmer capacitation.

MANDATE

To ensure effective demand driven and market oriented agricultural extension by providing competent and credible staff through training and timely provision of information to farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

STRUCTURE OF THE TRAINING DEPARTMENT

The department made up of two divisions namely the Training division and the Agri-Value Chain Division. Each division is supported by specialised units of operations.

CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE TRAINING DIVISION

FARMER TRAINING:
– Objective: To enhance the knowledge and skills of farmers in various aspects of agriculture.
– Functions: Designing and delivering training programs, organizing workshops and field visits, providing technical assistance to farmers, conducting training needs assessments.
– Principles of operation: Participant-centered approach, practical and hands-on training, culturally sensitive and context-specific content.
 
  1. STAFF TRAINING:
– Objective: To develop the competencies and expertise of ARDAS staff members.
– Functions: Identifying training needs of staff, designing training programs, coordinating with external trainers or institutes, organizing in-house training sessions.
– Principles of operation: Continuous learning and professional development, aligning training with organizational goals and strategies, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.
 
  1. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT:
– Objective: To capture, organize, and disseminate relevant agricultural knowledge within ARDAS.
– Functions: Developing databases and knowledge repositories, creating knowledge sharing platforms, facilitating knowledge exchange among staff, conducting research and analysis.
– Principles of operation: Open access to information, regular updating and maintenance of knowledge resources, fostering a collaborative and learning culture.
 
  1. AGRIBUSINESS/VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT:
– Objective: To promote the development of profitable and sustainable agribusinesses along the agricultural value chain.
– Functions: Conducting market research, facilitating value chain analysis, providing business development support, identifying investment opportunities, linking farmers with agribusinesses.
– Principles of operation: Market-oriented approach, promoting entrepreneurship, fostering partnerships and collaboration among stakeholders.
 
  1. AGRIC4SHE:
– Objective: To empower women in agriculture and promote gender equality.
– Functions: Conducting gender-focused training programs and workshops, advocating for women’s participation in decision-making processes, facilitating access to resources and networks for women farmers.
– Principles of operation: Gender mainstreaming, promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities, addressing gender-based barriers and challenges.
 
  1. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT:
– Objective: To design and update training curricula for different agricultural programs.
– Functions: Conducting needs assessments, developing course materials, aligning curricula with industry requirements, incorporating innovative teaching methods.
– Principles of operation: Relevance to current and future agricultural trends, learner-centered approach, continuous improvement and updates.
 
  1. YOUTH SERVICES:
Objective: To engage and empower young people in agriculture and rural development.
– Functions: Designing youth-focused training programs, organizing entrepreneurship and leadership development activities, facilitating access to resources and funding for young farmers, establishing youth networks.
– Principles of operation: Youth participation and ownership, providing mentorship and guidance, promoting innovation and creativity.
 
  1. MONITORING AND EVALUATION:
– Objective: To assess the effectiveness and impact of training programs and initiatives.
– Functions: Developing evaluation frameworks, designing data collection tools, conducting surveys and interviews, analyzing and reporting findings, providing feedback for program improvement.
– Principles of operation: Data-driven decision making, transparency and accountability, continuous learning and adaptation.
