FROM EARLY WARNING TO FINANCED ACTION.

The Drought Action Committee (DAC) High-Level Inception and Partnership Event is underway today at the Golden Conifer Functions Venue in Harare, bringing together Government, development partners, UN agencies, financial institutions, the private sector, farmer organisations and other key stakeholders to strengthen a coordinated and financed response to drought risks ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Opening the high-level engagement, Secretary for Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Professor Dr. Obert Jiri underscored the urgency of moving beyond early warning to concrete action: “We have the early warning. We have the evidence. We have the plan. We have the platform. What we need now is financed action

The engagement is advancing one plan, one coordination platform and one investment pipeline to turn preparedness priorities into coordinated, accountable and financed interventions that protect food security, farmers, livestock and livelihoods.

Agric budgets, targets reset

ZIMBABWE is recalibrating agricultural budgets, production targets and programmes to withstand the anticipated El Niño-induced drier-than-normal season, with every major intervention now being aligned to the Government’s six-pillar drought response strategy.

Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Professor Obert Jiri said the anticipated El Niño conditions would be a major determinant of how the sector plans and allocates resources.

“It is very critical for us to really look at it and say, as a country, how do we respond resource-wise to the coming El Niño season,” he said.

Matabeleland farmers deliver 300 tonnes in early wheat harvest

HARVESTING of the early-planted winter wheat crop has begun, with more than 300 tonnes already reaped from 41 hectares in Matabeleland, the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development has revealed.

Farmers planted 130 316 hectares of wheat this season, surpassing the national target of 125 000 hectares by more than 5 000 hectares. The bulk of the crop is reported to be in good condition across the country.

The Strategic Grain Reserve (SGR) currently holds 269 603,30 tonnes of grain, including 67 895,61 tonnes of wheat.

From Cabinet to the Provinces: Hon. Dr Anxious Jongwe Masuka drives six-pillar drought response

At the centre of the response are six interconnected pillars covering enhanced strategic grain reserves, accelerated climate-smart production, an integrated financing architecture, livestock drought mitigation, enhanced imports, and coordination, early-warning systems and capacity-building.

The interventions are designed to strengthen the country’s preparedness, sustain agricultural production, protect livestock and livelihoods, and safeguard national food security.

The response will also extend to the grassroots, with His Excellency President Dr E.D. Mnangagwa set to communicate directly with Chiefs, Headmen and Village Heads, strengthening the flow of preparedness information from national leadership to communities.

The approach is preparedness, not panic: plan early, coordinate widely, protect livelihoods and keep producing
